If you are running a business in an area with low water pressure, a fire pump is one of the most important investments you can make.
Fire pumps work by monitoring the water pressure in your sprinkler system. When a sprinkler head goes off in a fire, the water pressure in your system drops. This signals the fire pump to pull more water from the city water supply. Depending on the availability of city water, you may need to install a water storage tank to help supply the pump.
Does Your Building Need a Fire Pump?
Whether you need a fire pump depends upon the city water supply and your system's demand. High-rise buildings, storage warehouses, and buildings that need high-pressure to control a fire often need a fire pump. If you have a large number of sprinklers and your city water supply is insufficient, then you should install a fire pump. If your area has good water pressure, you probably won’t need one.

Types of Fire Pumps
There are two primary types of fire pumps:
- Horizontal split case fire pumps - These are easy to maintain, but they take up quite a bit of space.
- Vertical fire pumps - These are space-savers, but they take more work to maintain.
Each type of pump is available in either electric or diesel power, depending upon your building and setup.
